Binary Bay

Logic and ReasoningBinary NumbersGrades 3–6Keyboard

What students practice

Students practice binary place value, flipping switches worth powers of two (8, 4, 2, 1) so the lit switches add up to a ship's number, then reading the on/off pattern as the binary form of that number (for example, 13 = 8+4+1 = 1101).

How to play

Players press number keys 1 through 6 to flip the switches left to right, then press Enter to dock before the ship reaches the airlock, and Backspace to clear a mistake; missing a ship pauses the bay to show the correct switches, and three crashes ends the mission.

Teacher Setup

Teacher Setup lets a teacher turn the place-value and ship-number helper labels on or off and set the speed; the end screen offers a printable practice list of place values and numbers to write in binary.
