Glyph Grabber

Reading and SpellingSilent LettersGrades 3–6Keyboard

What students practice

Students practice identifying silent letters in spelling, swinging a crane to grab the single letter in a word that is not pronounced, with silent letter groups selectable by grade band and word length adjustable from shorter to the longest words.

How to play

Players use the left and right arrow keys to swing the crane and press the space bar to fire the grabber, which takes the first tile on its line (words drifting in front act as walls to swing around or wait out). Grabbing the wrong letter has the machine name the correct silent letter before that word returns later; letting a word reach the sound-out gate costs a shield, and three shields ends the shift.

Teacher Setup

Teacher Setup lets a teacher choose which silent letter groups are in play, the longest word length allowed, the speed, and whether the answer is shown after a miss. The end-of-shift report includes a printable list of words to practice.
