Fossil Finder

ScienceRock LayersGrades 3–6Keyboard

What students practice

Students practice reading rock layers, where the top layer is youngest and deeper layers are older, to find where a named fossil would be buried, across two, four, or more layers.

How to play

A card names a fossil to find; players press a column's number key to stop a drill in the layer where that fossil is buried. Stopping too shallow, too deep, or in the wrong rock snaps the drill bit, three snapped bits end the dig, and five correct finds in a row earn a combo bonus; a miss shows the right layer before that fossil returns.

Teacher Setup

Teacher Setup lets a teacher choose All Four rock layers, Ice Age plus Dinosaurs, or Deep Time, show or hide a clue about where the fossil's animal lived, set the speed, and choose whether a miss reveals the layer. A printable student report has students write the layer each fossil is found in.
